Novels and Text Books
I am an author of both fiction and non-fiction. My output, hitherto, includes three political thrillers for adults and two novels for young people; a number of text-books on the subjects of Geography and History and an historical novel about the Queen of Sheba. Most recently, a collection of reports from Africa.

My books:

"Sweden’s African Wars"
My book of reportage and debate entitled Sweden’s African Wars, was published in autumn 2008. It highlights the way in which Swedish development aid has, for decades, financed wars and supported dictatorships in Africa.

Press comments:

“I’ll be damned if it isn’t the best thing I’ve read in a long time. So, if you want an entirely different view on how to help deprived people I strongly urge you to read this book” (Johanne Hildebrandt, Aftonbladet)

“A collection of reports with an unfailing sense of style and depth of historical insight” (Stefan Helgesson, Dagens Nyheter)

“Undeniably Bengt Nilsson has the argument on his side” (Mats Wingborg, SIDA magazine The World Around)

“A confrontation with the Swedish state grants to all manner of warlords and dictators...a number of Nilsson’s readers wax lyrical... (Per Gudmundson, Svenska Dagbladet)

Sweden’s African Wars

"Makeda – Queen of Sheba”, published by the Bonnier publishing company in autumn, 2005, is about the mythical queen and her meeting with King Solomon in  Jerusalem. The story also reveals what became of the golden Ark of the Covenant - the most sacred relic of the Jews. My novel gives a completely fresh picture of an almost 3000 year-old story.

Comments from reviewers:

”... based on scrupulous research...exciting, didactic, exotic and sexy”. (Magazine Amelia)

”In his novel, Makeda – Queen of Sheba, Bengt Nilsson gives us a story that puts the biblical speculations of the Da Vinci Code into the shade.” (Sundsvalls Tidning)

”Makeda has all the necessary ingredients for a good historical novel… with that historical enigma that impels the reader...  an adventurous read of several hundred pages.” (Gefle Dagblad)

“A Stranger Came Knocking”
"... gruesomely exciting, in all its dark goriness it can flash like lightning, as in a James Ellroy novel, and despite its often fluttery intrigue, atmospherically it is, somehow quite feasible." (Göteborgsposten)

“A Jewish Inn in Baghdad"
"An unusually successful political thriller from Bengt Nilsson. Set mainly in the Middle East, a milieu that journalist Nilsson clearly knows as well as the back of his own hand.” (Arbetet)

“A Car for Mr Singh”
"... A Car for Mr Singh is a damned good novel. Suggestive, exuberant, pulsating; at once brutal and tender. Exciting, without losing its seriousness. It has infinitely more to say than the otherwise doctored reports that reach us from the Africa which is more that of the leftist entrepreneurs and the journalists than of the Africans themselves". (Magazine April)

Juvenile Literature
I have written two novels for youngsters, both of which were well received and placed high on the “Readers Own Book Jury” list. One reviewer had the following to say about them:

“Bear!” and “Follow John".  “Marvellous! An author with the ability to combine characteristics from Twin Peaks, the X-files and Astrid Lindgren to create something new and exciting and very amusing, in the field of Swedish youth literature. Bengt Nilsson knows how to tell a story and has an enviable talent for romance" (Svenska Dagbladet)
